Log Schoolhouse
This 1999 replicated log schoolhouse, funded by the Nacogdoches Junior Forum, is where visitors both young and old sit down to have an old-fashioned schoolhouse lesson and is the most popular activity on the tour. Everyone dons hats and bonnets and learn the rules of deportment for unruly behavior. Writing with quill pens are a part of each lesson.
The log school reflects the practice, common in the rural areas, of utilizing existing buildings for schools – which were either leased, donated or abandoned by their owners. Buildings were chosen for convenient location within walking distance (five miles). Most children attended school for “short sessions” only, due to an extensive growing season and the very real need for their labor.
